Synopsis

Mukagali Makataev was a man of great talent, a misunderstood and censored genius and an attentive father, but above all an alone fighter for freedom. As a poet he was a fortunate man, but wretched as well, who was only recognized after his death in 1976. The last years of his life were difficult and full of adversity. His life circumstances nevertheless inspired much of his literary work, to be considered nowadays as one of the fathers of Kazakh literature.

Director

Bolat Kalymbetov (Narynkol, 1955) is a Kazakh director recognized for his works as The Last Cold Days (1993) and Секер (2009). Mukagali (2021) is his last feature-film. With it he won the Ecumenical Jury Prize at the Tallinn Dark Nights Film Festival (PÖFF).
