Joyland is a fictional story set in Lahore about a middle-class family in which a wheelchair-bound yet severe patriarch rules over his two sons and daughters-in-law. He wants his kids to give him grandchildren, but all changes when his younger son, Haider, falls in love with Biba, a transgender dancer played by Alina Khan, while working as a background dancer for her.

Saim Sadiq (Lahore, 1991) is a Pakistani filmmaker. In 2019 he graduated from Columbia University School of the Arts with an MFA. He explored the world of trans dancers in the short film Darling and won the Orizzonti Award for Best Short Film at the 76th Venice International Film Festival. Joyland, her first feature film, has been successfully presented not only at Cannes but also at this year’s Toronto and Busan film festivals, with well-deserved recognition for the future of cinema coming from his country.
