Synopsis

Sezim is a nineteen-year-old Kyrgyz girl who lives with her family but aspires to go to university and live independently. She wants to fulfill her dream of studying in the capital at all costs. Events take an unexpected turn, when Sezim is kidnapped by a group of young men from her workplace and she is forced to marry a stranger, named Dayrbek. Torn between the desire for freedom and fidelity to tradition, Sezim desperately searches for a way out. Ala kachuu is a form of bride kidnapping that is still practiced in Kyrgyzstan.

Director

Maria Brendle (Germany, 1983) is a screenwriter and film director who lives in Zurich. She began her career as a journalist working for various television networks and advertising agencies. From 2008 to 2013, she graduated in film at the Zurich University of the Arts. Ala Kachuu – Take and Run received a nomination for Best Short Film at the last edition of the Academy Awards.
