Synopsis

Truck driver Xu Dong has to say goodbye to his beloved dog when his pregnant wife, Meiling, is about to give birth. Coincidentally, Ma Qianli who works in a heavily indebted real estate company, becomes the dog’s new owner. However, to stop the debt collectors, Ma has to cook the dog to feed them. The dog’s death turns its successive owners into enemies. Xu seeks revenge, though after several failed attempts, he ends up sympathizing with Ma’s plight. Meanwhile, Meiling learns of Xu’s love story and an insatiable hatred spreads among the three evoking the legend of the Manchurian tiger.

Director

Geng Jun grew up in Heilongjiang (China). Without having studied at a film school, he moved to Beijing and started directing. Hawthorn (2002), Diary in Bulk (2003), Barbecue (2004), Youth (2008), Airplane (2012) and The Hammer and The Sickle are Sleeping (2013) were his first films. With Free and Easy (2016) he won the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and received four nominations at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival, including Best Film and Best Director.
