Set in 1960s India, the film tells the story of the challenges faced by a young boy and a young widow who dream of escaping their oppressive and suffocating lives. Both are an image of each other: the young Naga lives in an idyllic and serene countryside but is subjected to all kinds of humiliations because of his economic situation; and the young widow, although belonging to a higher caste, is in turn deprived of all those things that would allow her to enjoy life, due to the prevailing customs and traditions of the world in which she feels imprisoned.
Girish Kasaravalli has made fifteen feature films over a career spanning four decades. All his films have won awards at national and international film festivals. Retrospectives of his filmography have been held at many festivals. Among the most recognized titles are The Ritual (1978), Tai Saheba (1999), The Island (2002), Hasina (2006), Gulabi Talkies (2008), and Riding the Dreams (2009).
