Khando is a 26 year old mother who works hard in the mountains to be able to feed her son Dhondup, who is her only family. Khando fears that Dhondgup will not be able to get out of poverty or get an education as she would have liked. So she ends up giving her son to a benefactor in order to provide him with a better future. The woman joins a migrant family before making the handover, who will accompany her on her journey through the mountains until the day she says goodbye to her son.

Dhondup Tsering was born and spent his early childhood in the Nepalese Mustang. He won a scholarship to the University of Tibetan Studies (CUTS) in Varnasi, India, where he did a Master’s degree in Buddhist Studies. In addition, in Dharamsala he took a photography course lead him to capture stories of his homeland, his environment, his roots and share them through his blog. This collected material would become the backbone of Ama Khando, his debut feature.
