EMPIRE HOTEL

Maria’s home has always been the Empire Hotel, in the traditional neighborhoods of Macau, where clothes hang between neons, and an entangled net of electric wires takes over streets flooded with vapour. With her raging father, the burden of keeping the decrepit hotel running stands on her shoulders. She sings Fado in a Casino where gambling and prostitution go hand in hand, but money is scarce and real estate speculators become insistent. Then is when Chu arrives, a mysterious young man with an obsessive interest in Maria. The film has been presented at the São Paulo International Film Festival 2018, the IndieLisboa International Independent Film Festival 2019 and the Pingyao Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon International Film Festival 2018.

Ivo Ferreira (1975, Lisbon) is a Portuguese director, writer and actor. His 2016 film “Letters from War” (2016) was shown at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival 2016.
