Synopsis

A satirical take on the mundane absurdities of life in modern-day Iran, these nine vignettes illuminate the lighter side of enduring under authoritarian rule. Whether choosing a name for a newborn, graduating from grade school, getting a driver’s license, applying for a job, or seeking approval for a film script, if you live in Iran, you best come fluent in Orwellian discourse. Progressing along a rough timeline from birth to death, each story is shot in a static camera angle as a single petitioner negotiates with an authority figure hovering just outside of frame, who is practiced in the language of doublespeak.

Director

Born in Tehran, Iran, writer, director and producer, Ali Asgari is a prominent Iranian cinema figure with many international awards to his name. Two of his shorts, More Than Two Hours (2013) and The Silence (2016), were nominated for Palme d’Or at Festival de Cannes and The Baby was in short film competition of Venice Film Festival 2014.

Alireza Khatami is an award-winning American Iranian writer, director, and producer based in Canada. Born into the indigenous Khamse tribe in southeast Iran, he was deeply influenced by the rich oral storytelling traditions of his heritage. This inspiration led him to create a unique storytelling style, blending fantasy and realistic narratives. His works poignantly explore precarious lives, identity politics, and feature a dark sense of humor.
