Synopsis
At the height of the coronavirus pandemic, from September 2020 to March 2021, non-profit organization Juan Eu Konek produced Kontra Corona, a documentary on how COVID-19 has affected the Filipino community in Europe, highlighting the crucial role Filipino frontliners have played in the battle, including those who have sadly lost their lives and those who have survived and continue to put themselves at risk while performing their duties. From the UK to the epicenter of the pandemic in Italy, to Spain and the Philippines, the film documented the story of our Filipinos in Europe during the pandemic. It is the first and only video documentation of its kind, emanating from the Filipino diaspora in the UK and Europe, with a team composed of embedded documentarians.
Director
Kontra Corona is executive-produced and written by veteran journalist Rose Eclarinal, and co-written by Gene Alcantara, Crystal Dias, producers Sandra Sotelo Aboy and Mye Mulingtapang, with behind-the-scenes talents based in Europe and Philippines. Associate Producer Jay Montelibano-MacLeod wrote the theme song for the documentary. Kontra Corona was funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, the largest community funder in the UK that distributes money raised by National Lottery players for good causes. Distilled from a six-part, 3-hour documentary, the two-hour Kontra Corona was shown on DZMM Teleradyo and The Filipino Channel in October 2022. It won the Best Documentary Film award at the Migration Advocacy and Media Awards by the Commission on Filipinos Overseas for 2021, awarded at the Manila Hotel in March 2022.
