Synopsis

The Sharp Edge of Peace is a revealing political thriller that follows four women from the Afghan government’s negotiating team with the Taliban before their takeover on August 15, 2021. With the withdrawal of the U.S. and NATO forces and the Taliban’s return to power, negotiations and promises of social change came to an end, giving way to the strict enforcement of sharia law, which directly impacts women. The four spokespersons of the negotiation, protagonists of this documentary, risk their lives trying to pave the way to peace with counterparts who have historically denied them even the most basic rights. Their intelligence, courage, and resilience stand as a powerful example of the determination and fighting spirit these women embody in their defense of peace and equality. The world is watching, and they are ready to go all the way, no matter the cost.

Director

Roya Sadat (Herat, 1983), a pioneering filmmaker from Afghanistan, is the first female director emerging from the post-Taliban era. Despite facing unimaginable challenges, Sadat’s resilience shines through her work, which usually exposes the oppression of women and human rights abuses globally. A graduate in Law and Political Science from Herat University, she began writing scripts in secret during the Taliban regime, when women’s education was banned. In 2003, she founded Roya Film House with her sister Alka Sadat and embarked on a journey of cinematic activism, starting with the film Three Dots (2003). Through initiatives like the Herat International Women’s Film Festival, she works to amplify women’s voices. Sadat has been recognized by the BBC and Florian Policy as an influential figure reshaping our world. Her acclaimed films include A Letter to the President (2017), which represented Afghanistan at the Academy Awards in 2018, Sima’s Song (2024) and The Sharp Edge of Peace (2024), which was featured in the HotsDocs 2024, the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival (HKAFF) 2024, the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024 and the Dokumentale 2025.
