Synopsis

Three women navigate their way through unfamiliar landscapes and the contours of the human heart. Natalia, a duped mail-order bride from Siberia, moves to New Zealand hoping to run a café at her new husband’s remote petrol station, but finds the reality disappointing and discovers secrets her husband and his sister are hiding. Briar (played by the director herself) is a numbed anaesthetist who, despite her professional success, struggles with loneliness and starts an online relationship with her sister’s ex. Lastly Faith, who is shocked to find a dead tenant in a property she purchased and embarks on a mission to honour the tenant’s life. The film explores themes of loneliness, connection, and human vulnerability.

Director

Loren Taylor (née Horsley, Auckland, 1977) is an accomplished director, actress, writer, and casting professional. She began her acting career as a teenager and gained international recognition for her role as Lily in Eagle vs Shark (2007), which she also co-wrote with Taika Waititi. She is known for her versatility in the industry and is involved in mentoring and supporting film communities in New Zealand. Her filmmaking often reflects personal and socially relevant themes. Her directorial debut feature film, The Moon Is Upside Down (2023), premiered at the First Feature Competition of the 27th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival where it won the Best First Feature, and was also featured in the Sydney, Santa Fe and Brisbane festivals.
