Synopsis

The film tells the story of a peculiar Tokyo family that lives off petty theft and a pension. After one of their habitual thefts, the father, Osamu, and his son find an abandoned girl on the street and decide to take her in, despite the mother’s initial reluctance. Despite their hardships and their life on the fringes of society, the family seems to find happiness and a genuine bond. However, an unexpected accident will expose a deeply kept secret, forcing them to confront the nature of their ties and question the meaning of family.

Director

Hirokazu Koreeda (1962) is a filmmaker known for themes of memory, death, and loss. Although he considered a path as a novelist, after graduating from Waseda University and working as an assistant director on various documentaries, he was seduced by the possibilities that cinema offered him.

 

In 1991, he directed his first film Lessons from a Calf, and since then he has directed over a dozen feature films. Among them, Nobody Knows (2004), Still Walking (2008), and After the Storm (2016) stand out. He won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013 for Like Father, Like Son (2013) and then won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018 for the film Shoplifters (2018).
