Synopsis

Hilarion Zabala’s mysterious olfactory problem has recurred. A psychiatrist suspects it to be a lingering case of phantosmia, a phantom smell, and possibly caused by trauma, a deep psychological fracture. One recommended radical process to cure the ailment was that Hilarion must go back and deal with the darkest currents of his past life in the military service. Reassigned in the very remote Pulo Penal Colony, he must also confront the horrific realities of his present situation.

Director

Lavrente Indico Diaz (1958), also knowsn as Liv Diaz, is a Filipino filmmaker and former film critic. He is frequently known as one of the key practitioners of the slow cinema genre, producing a diverse range of longest narrative films that explore social and political issues, minimalistic storytelling, long takes, and cinematic boundaries. Diaz gained significant international attention with Norte, the End of History (2013), which premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival to widespread acclaim. His subsequent works have continued to receive major recognition on the global stage: From What Is Before (2014) won the Golden Leopard at the 2014 Locarno International Film Festival; A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery (2016) received the Alfred Bauer Prize (Silver Bear) at the 66th Berlinale; and The Woman Who Left (2016) was awarded the Golden Lion at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival. His film Phantosmia (2024) was featured in the 82º Mostra Internazionale Mostra d’Arte Cinematografica de 2025. His latest film is Magalhaes (2025).
