Synopsis

Midwives follows the lives of Hla, a Buddhist midwife who owns a makeshift clinic in western Myanmar’s Rakhine State, and her Muslim apprentice Nyo Nyo. Despite ethnic and religious tensions, they work side by side providing essential maternity care to the persecuted Rohingya woman, an ethnic minority in Myanmar who face severe restrictions and denial of basic rights. The film is an observational documentary filmed over five years, highlighting the courage and resilience of these women bringing new life amid conflict, discrimination, and political upheaval in Myanmar. It offers a rare, intimate insight into the complex social realities of the country and the struggles of its people to maintain dignity and hope.
