Synopsis

The 1970s marked an era of transformations in northern New South Wales, especially in the regional town of Nimbin. The Aquarius Festival, held in May, 1973, was a ten-day music, art, and cultural gathering that brought together like-minded people who led the countercultural movement and alternative lifestyles that transformed Australian society. Through hours of footage, this documentary directs our gaze to the festival and examines the potential of this event, along with the unintended consequences that reach us to this day.

Director

Wendy Champagne started as a freelance radio and print correspondent in South-East Asia, but was increasingly drawn to larger format storytelling, becoming a published author, screenplay writer and a documentary filmmaker. Among others, her filmography includes Taxi (2013) and Bas! Beyond the Red Light (2009). Her latest film Aquarius (2024), has been screened at various festivals, such as in the Official Selection of CinefestOZ (2024), the Adelaide Film Festival (2024), the Documentary Australia Award section at The Sydney Film Festival (2024), the Melbourne International Film Festival (2024), and the Brisbane International Film Festival (2024).
