Iranian film showcase

EIranian cinema has its followers and both the new films that are <\/span>released<\/span> and the retrospective and monographic cycles are always eagerly awai<\/span>ted <\/span>events<\/span>. Iranian cinema is usually an auteur cinema, easily recognizable by its narrative proposals and scripts, which shows th<\/span>e good training of its filmmakers<\/span>. <\/span>O<\/span>n this occasion, we have put together a<\/span> group of five movies that we can screen with the collaboration of the Cultural Council o<\/span>f the Iranian Embassy in Spain and the Farabi Foundation, whose interest in<\/span> distributing<\/span> t<\/span>his cinema is more than <\/span>evident<\/span>. The titles that are part of the showcase are of recent production, <\/span>since they are dated between 2020 and 2022, and their makers are young directors born between the <\/span>seventies and the eighties of the 20<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span> century. <\/span>This program joins the <\/span>large number<\/span> of films from this country that we program annually at <\/span>Cinemes<\/span> Girona in Barcelona, MK2 Cine Paz in Madrid, on the television channel BETE<\/span>V\u00c9 and the CASA ASIA Channel within the online <\/span>platform<\/span> FILMIN.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

When Yasmin was six years old, the same age as her son in the present, her family emigrated to Berlin. Now, she must return to Iran because of her father\u2019s death, but the journey is not<\/span> easy since her son is autistic. Arriving in Iran, Yasmin, who ha<\/span>rdly knew her father, is astonished by the inheritance he has left her. Her brief and unwanted stay in her father\u2019s hometown, which allows her to meet those who were related to him, gives Yasmin a new understan<\/span>ding of human beings, <\/span>l<\/span>ife<\/span> and death.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Behrooz <\/span>Shoaibi<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>was born in 1979, in Mashhad, and has worked in different branches of cinema. As an actor, he started his career with <\/span>Ebrahim <\/span>Hatamikia\u2019s<\/span> <\/span>The<\/span> Glass Agency <\/span><\/span>(1998<\/span>),<\/span> and<\/span> gained critical and public attention with Homayoun Asadian\u2019s <\/span><\/span>Gold & <\/span>Copper<\/span><\/span> (2010). His films and TV series<\/span> include: <\/span><\/span>The Sloe Garden <\/span><\/span>(2005); <\/span><\/span>Wings of Happiness <\/span><\/span>(2008); <\/span><\/span>Abandoned <\/span><\/span>(2009<\/span>); <\/span><\/span>Somewhere Between Staying and Going <\/span><\/span>(2010); and <\/span><\/span>S<\/span>ecluded<\/span><\/span> (2014). With his first feature film, <\/span><\/span>The Corridor<\/span><\/span>, <\/span>Shoaibi<\/span> won Best Debut Film at the 2013 Fajr Film Festival.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

It tells<\/span> the story of two boys <\/span>who<\/span> live in <\/span>opp<\/span>o<\/span>site<\/span> sides of the country with the shared story of both have lost<\/span> one of their <\/span>parent<\/span>s<\/span>. <\/span>The boy living in the North has lost his father, while the boy living in the South<\/span> has lost his mother. Both are in search of that which can replace the love lost in the loss of their parents.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Afshin Hashemi<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, born 1975 in Tehran, is an actor<\/span>, <\/span>writer<\/span> and director of <\/span>Iranian<\/span> cinema. He began his professional career in theatre in 1993, acting and directing <\/span>more than 2<\/span>0 <\/span>plays<\/span>. He is best known for the movies <\/span><\/span>Don\u2019t<\/span> Be Tired <\/span><\/span>(2013, co-directed alongside Mohsen <\/span>Gharaie<\/span>), <\/span><\/span>Soft Voice <\/span><\/span>(2015), <\/span><\/span>Temporary License <\/span><\/span>(201<\/span>7), <\/span><\/span>Auntie Frog <\/span><\/span>(2018), <\/span><\/span>Goodbye Shirazi Girl <\/span><\/span>(2019) and his latest feature film, <\/span><\/span>Sea Boys <\/span><\/span>(2021).<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

A war-torn family from a border town called Mahran must flee to <\/span>Yazd, a city in the center of the country. There they become embroiled in the personal affairs of their hosts, who a<\/span>re looking for a new partner for their widowed son.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Roqiye<\/span> Tavakoli<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, born in 1985, studied <\/span>Cinematic Arts and a master\u2019s degree in Dramatic Literature at <\/span>Sooreh<\/span> University, which is in Tehran. She is a lecturer and head of the department at<\/span> Yazd University of Arts and Culture. Tavakoli<\/span> is a member of the Iranian Short Film Association <\/span>of <\/span>Khaneh<\/span> C<\/span>inema. The director has made more than 30 short and documentary <\/span>films<\/span>, <\/span>which have been presented and widely applauded in more than 50 local and international festivals. She has won awards at festivals such as the Armenian International Women\u2019s Film Festival Kin, Dubai <\/span>Idba<\/span> Awards, <\/span>Rooyesh<\/span> Film Festival and Parvin <\/span>Etesami<\/span> Film Festival.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Asho, 11, whose father is <\/span>accused of murder believes <\/span>he lost his mother during childhood. Freydoun<\/span> Najafi<\/span><\/span>, born 1977 in <\/span>Koohrang<\/span>, has a degree in cinematography from <\/span>Soureh<\/span> Film University. He has made <\/span>several<\/span> short films and documentaries. His films have been <\/span>screened<\/span> at more than 100 <\/span>national and international film <\/span>festivals<\/span> and he has received some 40 awards. <\/span><\/span>The Skier <\/span><\/span>was his feature debut and was nominated for the APSA Awards <\/span>for Best Young Feature. The director has also <\/span>participated<\/span> in more than 10 international festivals such as Cambridge and Olympia. <\/span>Nejafi<\/span> was the recipient of the Crystal Simorgh Award at the 27<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span> Fa<\/span>jr International Film Festival for the film <\/span><\/span>Where is Fatemeh<\/span>\u2019s House? <\/span><\/span>which was also <\/span>selected for the 61<\/span><\/span>st<\/span><\/span> Berlin Film Festival. He has won five Golden Butterfly Awards from the ICFF with <\/span><\/span>Where is Fatemeh\u2019s <\/span>House?<\/span><\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>The <\/span>Skier<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>The Rooster<\/span><\/span>, and <\/span><\/span>The Twelfth Team-mate<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> The Last Migration<\/span><\/span> was part of t<\/span>he Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival and the Montreal Film Festival, won the London SW<\/span>EEFT Award for Best Documentary as well as the Best Documentary Award from the 6<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span> Iran International Documentary Festival.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/span><\/h4>\n
