Synopsis
Winganganha (in Wiradjuri means remember, know, think) is a poetic journey that brings together archival material and narrative to reconstruct history. This documentary provides an in-depth analysis of the archive’s impact on First Nations peoples and Australia in general, narrated through Wiradjuri artist, Jazz Money. Commissioned by the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), Winganganha was born out of a project to recover archives associated with the history of Aboriginal peoples, to understand the world today. Jazz Money explored the NFSA’s collection for more than two years to become familiar with the history of First Nations peoples in Australia. The film is presented as a poem in five acts, trying to capture both the horror and beauty of the narratives that these archives provide, highlighting the importance of memory and history in the formation of our collective identity.
Director
Jazz Money is a descendant of the Wiradjuri Nation and is currently primarily engaged in poetry and audiovisual projects, film and performance. Jazz Money’s first poetry collection, the bestseller How to Make a Basket, won the 2020 David Unaipon Prize. Winhanganha is the international artist’s first feature film, which pulls from archival material an innovative film entirely from archival material to propose a new perception of Australia’s history from the perspective of Aboriginal peoples.
