Synopsis

Set in New Zealand in the 1950s, the film tells the story of three girls interned in an institution for criminals. Nellie and Daisy become friends in an initial social re-education center, and after trying to escape they are relocated to a new institution where they meet Lou. The trio constantly rails against the system and frequently take refuge in their blossoming friendship. Faced with the escalating violence of the educators towards the girls, Nellie and Daisy propose to plan an uprising in the institution, but unexpectedly Lou wants no part of it.

Director

Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu is a film and theatre director born in Auckland, Australia. As a director and screenwriter, her short drama Ani (2019) was nominated at the Berlin International Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival (2019). Her short film When we were Kids won two awards at 2023 New Zealand International Film Festival. She also contributed to the award-winning film Waru (2017) with his performance. Stewart-Te Whiu made her directorial debut with the film We Were Dangerous (2024), following three girls in a 1950s reform school. The film was awarded a special jury prize at the American South by Southwest Festival.
