Synopsis
The film follows the story of Azra, a young girl struggling to find her identity in a world that demands her to conform to the traditional norms imposed on her by her mother, a conservative Muslim woman. When her father suddenly passes away on a trip to his home country, Azra and her mother Mariam are drawn into an adventure filled with memories that will make them understand that their realities are not so different. Set in Pakistan, the plot explores themes of love, sacrifice and personal identity through the life of Azra’s mother, who tries to reconcile her family life with her own desires and dreams. The narrative addresses the conflict between societal expectations and personal desire.
Director
Fawzia Mirza was born in London, Canada, to a family of Pakistani origin. She graduated in English and Political Science from Indiana University in Bloomington and then moved to Chicago to pursue a law degree. Mirza practiced law for a couple of years before deciding to turn her life around and pursue acting. All her artistic production advocates for LGBT rights and reflects the concerns of the collective. Mirza openly declared herself a lesbian Muslim in 2016 and as an “actress, activist, writer, producer, lawyer and passionate woman.” In 2020, her participation in the adaptation of the short film The Queen of my Dreams into a feature film allowed her to participate in the Toronto International Film Festival Writers Studio and Filmmaker Lab.
