Synopsis

Based on real events, Ransomed (Bigongsik Jakjeon, 2023) recreates the kidnapping of a South Korean ambassador in the streets of Beirut during the Lebanese civil conflict of the 1980s. In the film, young diplomat Lee Min-joon (Ha Jung-woo) is given the mission to deliver ransom money to save Ambassador Oh Jae-seok (Im Hyeong-gook), kidnapped twenty months earlier in Lebanon. However, the mission is complicated by political reasons, as with elections and the Olympics on the horizon, the South Korean government is desperate to avoid any failure or humiliation. This tension between internal and external affairs creates a constant state of alarm for viewers. With unexpected plot twists, a constant stream of new players and masterful action scenes, Ransomed captures the essence of the thriller in the purest old-school Hollywood style.

Director
