Synopsis

In early 2017, Indigenous actor David Gulpilil was diagnosed with lung cancer, and his doctors estimated he had six months to live. However, David defied the odds and, in 2021, continued to do what he does best, facing the camera in what is likely to be his last major work and, at the same time, the most personal: My Name is Gulpilil. This documentary, directed by Molly Reynolds, is characterized by its reflective and contemplative style, weaving the past and present of Gulpilil’s life. It uses archival footage from his past films and performances, combined with new footage that captures his day-to-day life as he battles the disease. Reynolds’ direction is intimate and respectful, allowing Gulpilil’s personality and story to shine through. My Name is Gulpilil explores Gulpilil’s cultural impact on Australian cinema, asserting himself as a pioneering figure who brought Indigenous stories and voices to a global audience. Throughout his career, he starred in iconic films such as Walkabout (1971), Storm Boy (1976), Rabbit-Proof Fence (2002) and The Tracker (2002).
