Synopsis
Madina is a dancer who lives with her grandmother, her little brother and her two-year-old daughter. To support her family, she works as a dance instructor during the day and is a go-go dancer at night. Madina survives by being forced to endure the harassment of her ex-husband and the political advancement of an unpleasant oligarch. In addition, she has just discovered a family secret that will completely change her life. This film tells the story of a resilient woman who sees her expectations and doubts clash. Madina also explores the patriarchal structure that prevents women and mothers from moving forward on their own. This film is based on real events experienced by the lead actress Madina Akylbekova.
Director
Aizhan Kassymbek is a Kazakh filmmaker who has gained much recognition through her films based on the four basic elements of life. Her first two short films, Water (2018) and Air (2018), were screened at festivals in Europe and Asia. Fire (2021) was her first feature film and premiered at the Busan International Film Festival the same year, before traveling to the Cottbus Film Festival and the Singapore Film Festival. Her most recent work is Madina (2023).
