Synopsis
Love Lies (2024) is a romantic comedy that explores the dark side of modern love through online scams. Yu, a renowned obstetrician-gynecologist, after downloading a dating app meets a charming French engineer, Joe. However, this man is not who he says, he is part of a network of online scammers. As their relationship progresses so does Joe’s guilt and Yu’s hope that despite discovering she has been swindled out, she still believes in the possibility of genuine love. The film poses a reflection on what true love means and explores how authentic relationships based initially on lies and deception can become.
Director
Ho Miu-ki is a Hong Kong director and screenwriter, mostly recognized for her work in comedy films. Before her directorial debut with Love Lies (2024), she had worked as a screenwriter on several projects such as Poker King (2009) and All’s Well Ends Well (2012). Her style is characterized by knowing how to mix humor with deeper elements of reflection or social criticism. Her first feature film, Love Lies (2024) was the winner of the First Feature Film Initiative Professional Group in Hong Kong, thus gaining recognition as a director in the Hong Kong scene.
