Synopsis
Kana is a 21-year-old who defies social norms and is diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The protagonist is portrayed as a directionless young woman who even falls in love just to pass the time. Her boyfriend, Honda, with whom she lives, tries to please her by paying the rent and cooking for her. However, she starts to feel like a burden as she begins to question her relationship with Hayashi, a self-assured young man. Desert of Namibia offers a vibrant and unembellished portrayal of Gen Z in Tokyo, highlighting her surprising and irreverent energy.
Director
Yoko Yamanaka is a Japanese filmmaker born in Nagano in 1997. Her debut film, Amiko (2017), won the Audience Award at the 2017 Pia Film Festival and was later invited to the Berlin International Film Festival, where she became the youngest director to participate. Desert of Namibia (2024) premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes and received the FIPRESCI Prize. Her films are known for their emotional intensity, minimalist style, and critical perspectives on contemporary Japanese society.
