Synopsis
Since the first case in 2006, voice phishing crimes in South Korea have been on the rise, making victims vulnerable to all sorts of scams. Citizen of a Kind (2024), denounces this global problem, focusing on a mother who is involved in a desperate search for a loan to repair the losses she must take on because her business has burned down. She receives a call from Son, a supposed bank employee who offers her a loan on good terms. However, after the first installment of the money, Son asks Duk-hee for higher and higher fees, which he is unable to pay, until he realizes that he has been the victim of a scam, and decides to take revenge.
Director
Filmmaker Park Young-Ju (1985) opted for film directing after realizing that as a screenwriter professionally speaking she would only work for others, at best, and realized that she wanted to try her luck as a filmmaker. Her first short film, 1 kilogram (2016), was successfully screened at the Cannes Film Festival, and she then decided to make her first feature film, Second Life (2018), which was the stimulus she needed to continue her career as a director. Citizen of a Kind (2024) is her second film and the one we have chosen to open this twelfth edition of the Asian Film Festival Barcelona, both for the theme itself and the treatment given to it, as well as for the interest aroused by its director whose future we believe to be promising.
