Synopsis
In post-Only Child Policy China, Wei’s parents, a middle-class family, remain convinced that the social demand for excellence is the right path for their son. Meanwhile, when they meet Yan Shuo, their son’s enigmatic new friend, they seem to find a chance to change their destiny. From their first meeting, the characters build a dynamic that revolves around a bizarre crossover of needs. Secrets begin to be uncovered, leading to a rising exposure of weaknesses in the family.
Director
Jianjie Lin is one of the most recent and distinctive voices in contemporary Chinese cinema today. The young director left his bioengineering career behind when the seductive world of filmmaking sidetracked him. He left China to study film at New York University. He met success with the short film A visit (2016) which was screened at numerous international festivals. Following the good acceptance of his latest project, A Brief Hisotry of a Family (2024), at festivals such as Sundance and Berlin, he is currently developing his first feature film.
