Synopsis
Ademoka’s Education follows the story of Ademoka, a teenage illegal immigrant who is forced to beg on the streets of a Kazakh village. Ademoka is a talented young woman who remains steadfast in her dream of studying despite being illegal in the country. When the time comes, she is given the opportunity to receive an education, and help comes from an unexpected source: Ahab, a failed alcoholic who offers her a helping hand and becomes the young woman’s mentor. The film focuses on the protagonist’s struggle to find her place in the world.
Director
Adilkhan Yerzhanov is a Kazakh film director and screenwriter born in 1982. He graduated in film directing from the Kazakh National Academy of Arts in 2009, although part of his training took place in New York. His films are internationally acclaimed and have won awards at several film festivals – The Owners (2014) was presented at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Free Spirit Award at the Warsaw Film Festival. The Plague at the Karatas Village (2016) received the NETPAC Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival, and his film Atbay’s Fight (2019) participated in the WFF’s International Competition. And in 2020, Yellow Cat premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
