Synopsis
Savita, a 23-year-old from an orthodox family in rural India, is yet another victim of the so-called arranged marriage. Through the traditional rituals leading up to the protagonist’s wedding, A Match (2023) aims to stimulate a subtle reflection on this kind of celebration. The film focuses on Savita’s emotions during these ceremonies, highlighting how the wedding ring session between grooms and brides reflects the frustration of women, especially of the younger generations, in the face of the patriarchy entrenched in society.
Director
Jayant Digambar Somalkar is an Indian filmmaker who studied film at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), one of the best institutions for film studies in India. After completing his academic training, he quickly began to participate in the direction and production of independent film projects and short films. Since then, his approach and style have gone hand in hand with the treatment of social and cultural issues through an introspective and realistic narrative. His debut, however, has been vigorous with A Match (originally Sthal, 2023). The National Film Award of India (2023) and the Mumbai International Film Festival of the same year have recognized Jayant Digambar Somalkar as an emerging promise in social cinema.
