Synopsis
12.12: The Day (2023) is set against the backdrop of the military insurrection that took place on the night of December 12, 1979 in South Korea, two months after the assassination of President Park Chung Hee. The coup is led by Chun Doo-hwan (Hwang Jung-min), commander of the Defense Security Command, supported by a group of loyal officers. The film evokes the reluctance of a section of the army to the uprising by a group of military followers of Lee Tae-shin (Jung Woo-sung), commander of the Capital Defense Command. Lee Tae-shin, a stubborn soldier who believes that the military should not take political action, opposes Chun Doo-hwan and tries to stop him. The conflict between the two intensifies, as the military leaders stand firm in their decision and the Minister of Defense, after prolonged resistance, disappears. This film shows how a coup d’état takes place and a dictatorship is established.
